CNR-IOM – Materials Foundry
The Materials Foundry Institute (IOM) is part of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), the largest public research organization in Italy. IOM carries out research activities in condensed matter physics, nanoscience, materials science and biophysics, combining fundamental science with the development of advanced technologies.
The institute studies and develops advanced materials, nanostructures, biosystems, sensors and devices at the micro- and nanoscale, integrating theory and simulation, synthesis, advanced characterization and nanofabrication.
IOM operates several advanced laboratories and research infrastructures, many of which are open to the international scientific community through dedicated access programs. The institute is strongly involved in European and international research networks and coordinates the Nano Foundries and Fine Analysis (NFFA) infrastructure, which provides open access to cutting-edge facilities for nanoscience and nanotechnology research.
Research activities at IOM address major scientific and technological challenges, including quantum technologies, energy and sustainability, advanced functional materials, nanoelectronics, health and nanomedicine.
The institute is mainly based in Trieste, one of Europe’s leading science hubs, and works in close collaboration with universities, synchrotron and free-electron laser facilities, international research centers and industry partners.
IOM welcomes students, early-career researchers and international visitors through collaborations, internships, PhD programs and access to its research infrastructures.
