Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research centre specializing in the generation and application of advanced synchrotron radiation and free-electron laser sources for scientific research and innovation.
The centre operates FERMI, the seeded free-electron laser, and Elettra, the synchrotron radiation source currently undergoing a major upgrade towards Elettra 2.0, a new-generation light source designed to further enhance the facility’s performance and expand research opportunities for the international user community. Elettra 2.0 is expected to become available to users in 2027.
Supported by a dozen specialized laboratories, these two infrastructures provide highly focused and ultra-bright beams that allow researchers to investigate matter at the atomic and molecular scale, revealing structures, chemical processes and ultrafast phenomena that would otherwise remain invisible.
The techniques available support a broad range of scientific fields, including materials science, physics, chemistry, life sciences, environmental studies, energy research, nanotechnology and cultural heritage. Experiments carried out at the beamlines enable advanced imaging, spectroscopy and diffraction studies, with applications ranging from new materials and batteries to biomolecules, catalysts and quantum systems.
Every year, scientists, students, PhD candidates and early-career researchers from all over the world access the facilities to perform experiments, take part in training activities and collaborate with highly specialized technical and scientific staff in a strongly international and interdisciplinary environment.
