International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
ICGEB is a leading intergovernmental organisation for research, training and technology transfer in Life Sciences and Biotechnology, operating since 1987. Established within the United Nations Common System as a Centre of excellence for research and training in molecular biology and genetics for the benefit of developing countries and economies in transition, it contributes to solving some of the major problems affecting health, nutrition, agriculture and industrial development in the field of biotechnology.
An independent, international organisation since 1994, ICGEB is supported by 69 Member States, with laboratories located in Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape Town, (South Africa). The Headquarters of the Centre is in Trieste, Italy.
ICGEB develops innovative research in the fields of biomedicine, biopharmaceuticals, agroindustry and environmental protection and promotes the transfer and application of its results to industry at the international level.
ICGEB supports higher education through Pre- and Postdoctoral fellowship programmes, the organisation of international scientific meetings and workshops world-wide and by conducting advanced research projects in its laboratories. ICGEB Trieste comprises 18 research groups, involving over 300 people from more than 40 different nations.
ICGEB also promotes scientific culture through numerous public engagement activities. Podcasts of lessons, meetings, courses and seminars organised by ICGEB are freely available on YouTube and register an average 11,000 users each month.
Each year, ICTP organizes about 60 international conferences and workshops. These activities keep the Centre at the forefront of global scientific research and enable ICTP staff scientists to offer Centre associates, fellows and conference participants a broad range of research opportunities.
ICTP pursues scientific excellence in research and training in a variety of fields, including:
- High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics
- Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics
- Mathematics
- Earth System Physics
- Quantitative Life Sciences
- Science, Technology and Innovation
- Emerging Research Areas (Medical Physics, and Scientific Computing)
- Emerging Research Areas (Medical Physics, and Scientific Computing)
ICTP is funded largely through a generous grant from the Italian government and base financial support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is a UNESCO Category 1 institute.
